General Description
This position is located within the AST Health System and may work at Shawnee or Little Axe Norman locations, or both. The purpose of the Medical Assistant (MA) is to assist the providers as needed with patient visits. During these visits the MA will also be responsible for providing accurate and timely laboratory test results to the medical staff. It will be a requirement of this position to potentially travel and work in the Little Axe Clinic and Shawnee Clinic. This position functions under the supervision of the RN supervisor.
Responsibilities & Duties
Provides a basic level of care and treatment to patients per scope of practice.
Obtains patient history, weight, vital signs and assists in the assessment of patient for symptoms of illness and report acute findings to the provider.
Accurately documents patient information in the Electronic Health Record.
Perform testing when needed. Such as EKG/ECG, Spirometry and/or specimen collection, under CLIA guidelines.
Ensure the accuracy of the laboratory tests performed by completing annual competencies.
Verify instrument/equipment function by performing QC and calibration tests/maintenance per policy.
Participates in continuous quality improvement activities, surveys and peer reviews.
Safeguards confidentiality of the medical charts/records and complies with all local, state, and federal laws pertaining to medical records. Assures compliance with all HIPAA regulations concerning use, retrieval, storage, and sharing of medical records.
Adhere to standards related to patient safety, universal precautions, proper hand hygiene, etc.
If certified, can assist with immunization or therapeutic injections per order from provider.
Assist providers and nursing staff with procedures, managing supplies/equipment and scheduling.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education Requirements and Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Associates Degree in Medical Assisting or Certified Medical Assistant through American Association of Medical Assistants preferred.
Prefer to have 1-5 years’ experience as a Medical Assistant.
Knowledge of physiology, anatomy and the appearance and location of major organ systems such as the urinary track digestive, and respiratory systems.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Computer literacy required.
Able to demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills.
The ability to interact well with patients, staff, and other agency professionals.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Good organizational and assessment skills.
The ability to perform duties with a minimum of supervision.
The ability to function as a team member.
The ability to start work on time.
Must have a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License.
Must be able to pass a background check.
Must be able to pass a drug test.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend or kneel for long periods of time.
Sitting or standing or walking for long period of time; occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, stooping; good finger dexterity and feeling; frequent repetitive motions; talking hearing and visual acuity
