General Description

This position is located within the AST Health System and is primarily located at the Shawnee Clinic location.  The AST Health System is an outpatient multi-disciplinary ambulatory clinic established and managed by the Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma and provides direct care services to Native American and other patients. It may be a requirement of this position to travel and work in the Little Axe Clinic, PlusCare and/or Shawnee Clinic as needed, which are located in Norman and Shawnee, Oklahoma. Position is Full-Time to assist with patient care operations and patient flow.  Monday – Friday (option of 10 hour shifts); no weekends and no holidays required.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Obtains patient history, weight, vital signs and assists in the assessment of patients for symptoms of illnesses.
  • Provides practical nursing services according to established national and tribal standards, including the administration of medications and IV fluids under the supervision of the Clinic Registered Nurse.
  • Documents medical services provided in the patient’s chart including all observations, assessments, nursing interventions, physician orders, treatments plan, follow up instructions, telephone and web encounters.
  • Participates in continuous quality improvement activities, surveys and peer reviews.
  • Assists in the promotion of continuity of care by providing health instructions, patient education and collaborating with other tribal and local health providers.
  • Assists with the provision of emergency medical treatment as instructed by a supervisor, including assignments relating to the Clinic Emergency Preparedness Plan.
  • Prepares and submits required reports and records in a timely manner.
  • Protects patient confidentiality according to nursing and tribal standards.
  • Assists with patient intake and information including required eligibility documentation.
  • Functions as laboratory testing personnel, when needed, under CLIA guidelines.
  • Safeguards confidentiality of the medical charts/records and complies with all local, state, and federal laws pertaining to medical records. Assures compliance with all HIPAA regulations concerning use, retrieval, storage, and sharing of medical records.
  • Review and assist with managing referrals as needed.
  • Assist in managing the patient schedule.
  • Will also include some registration desk duties for when needed for the clinic.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education Requirements and Qualifications

  • Have (2) years of practical nursing experience or equivalent background training including patient assessments, counseling, treating minor chronic diseases and acute emergencies.
  • Maintain current and valid, Oklahoma license as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Graduation from high school and an accredited school of Practical Nursing conferring eligibility as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Knowledge of fundamental nursing care principles, practices and procedures. Must have a basic knowledge of adverse symptoms and possess the ability to react in emergencies.
  • Must be reliable, detailed oriented, capable of multi-tasking with excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as strong professional customer-service interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to relate well with co-workers and the general public.
  • Ability to adjust to changing conditions.
  • Must be computer literate required (Windows operating systems- (Microsoft Word, Excel).
  • Must have a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Must be able to pass a drug test.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend or kneel for long periods of time.
  • Sitting or standing or walking for long period of time; occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, stooping; good finger dexterity and feeling; frequent repetitive motions; talking hearing and visual acuity
