General Description
The Assistant Teacher carries on his/her duties under the direction of the Teacher or Master Teacher and is responsible to the Director of the Center, Master Teacher, and Teacher.
Responsibilities
  • Role and general responsibilities: Responsible for the care and safety of the children.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and a flexible, positive approach to his/her job.
  • Maintain prompt hours and notify the Director in the event of illness.
  • Maintain appropriate records and fully understand confidentiality.
  • Participate in achieving the objectives of the Center Understands and applies the philosophy of the Childcare Center.
  • Assist with childcare functions geared towards the enrichment of child, parent, and staff interrelations and program planning and development.
  • Works together with other teachers to from a strong team.
  • Help with the general care and cleanliness of equipment and materials of the Center.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities regarding Children:
  • The Assistant Teacher welcomes the children and makes them feel "at home" in the Center.
  • Most important responsibility is the care, safety, and well-being of all children in the center.
  • Observe children in your group.  Give parents a written daily report of child’s activities and behaviors. 
  • Provide a stimulating program/lesson plan of activities for his/her group with attention to: individual development, emotional, physical, psychological and social needs of each child; and ensures respect for individual initiative, and the safety and health of the children.
  • Promote good nutritional habits and sees that there is a calm atmosphere for lunch, snacks and nap time.
  • Provides a model of good social conduct.
  • Has a responsibility to communicate with the Master Teacher or Teacher any concerns arising from a child's difficulty in coping with the program and to work with the Director towards a solution.
  • In the event that a child seems unwell, it is the Assistant Teacher’s responsibility to see that steps are taken to protect the health of the child and the other children in consultation with the Director,  Program Assistant, Master Teacher, or Teacher.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities regarding Administration:
  • Attends staff meetings and required trainings as scheduled.
  • Makes suggestions regarding purchasing of equipment and materials, etc., in consultation with the Director, Program Assistant, Master Teacher or Teacher.
  • Has a responsibility to communicate with the Director concerns regarding any problem that cannot be resolved and is leading to a confliction situation.
  • Provides written records of monthly programming in a timely manner as required by the Director per the necessary deadlines.
  • If child abuse is suspected, you are required by law to report the incident.  You are required to cooperate fully in the investigation of any allegation. 
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements and Qualifications
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Working toward High School Diploma or GED*Must have completed 10th grade.
  • Prior experience of working with infants and young children in a center setting.
  • Must take appropriate child development courses to meet state requirements.
  • Valid OK Driver’s License.
  • Must be willing to obtain CDA certification or equivalent with one year of employment.
  • Must have adequate transportation.
  • Must be able to stoop, crawl, kneel, and bend in order to speak to children at the child’s eye level, to play with children, and to pick up toys/equipment off the floor.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and hold children:           
  • Must attend staff meetings as well as parents meetings when required.
  • Must be able to pass criminal background check.
  • Infant and Toddler Teachers:  up to 36 pounds
  • Two-Year Old Teachers:  up to 50 pounds
  • Preschool Teachers:  up to 70 pounds
  • Native American Preference/EOE/Drug Free Workplace
