General Description
This position is located at the Absentee Shawnee Tribal Health System Resource Center in Norman, Oklahoma. The purpose of the position is to assess readiness for physical activity and facilitate, develop and provide exercise prescriptions for physical activity participants, clients, patients, tribal employees and community members. The Physical Activities Specialist must be able to provide and supervise physical activities, participate in the implementation of general fitness/activity requirements that encourage, support, and educate Native American people on lifestyle changes to improve their quality of life. The incumbent will be well versed in physical activity as a treatment pillar related to diabetes prevention and management, cardiovascular disease prevention and management, and the importance of living an active, healthy lifestyle.
Responsibilities & Duties
Provide clients/patients with exercise consultation, exercise prescription, personal training, behavior modification coaching; work with diabetes team and clinic staff to receive exercise prescription referrals.
Assess ASTHS communities to identify assets, resources and needs to increase the level of physical activity of individuals of all age groups.
Specify goals, objectives and evaluate outcomes of services according to time lines established by IHS Best Practices, SDPI grant specifications and Diabetes and Wellness Program guidelines.
Identify the kinds of resources that will meet current needs utilizing formal and informal input from a wide spectrum of health and community organizations.
Target specific community groups for intervention based on evidence based approaches and community readiness.
Facilitate community participation in the provision of community-specified programs, activities and facilities.
Formalize all programs and activities according to ASTHS Diabetes Program Guidelines and as adapted by the local community.
Facilitate Tribal level support and recognition of persons and communities that increase their physical activities through program participation.
Use collaborative means to accomplish day-to-day activities and adherence to personnel policies to meet diabetes program objectives.
Research new and updated health & fitness data to develop new and current fitness techniques and strategies.
Inspect, maintain, and inventory all exercise and testing equipment.
Actively participate/ facilitate community events focused on health promotion and disease prevention for tribal communities.
Provide age appropriate fitness interventions across the lifespan continuum.
Maintain and update documentation of physical activity education in patient records as needed to meet the needs of the patient.
Prepare, review, select culturally appropriate nutrition education materials
Prepare, write and submit monthly news articles to Tribal media publications.
Work with other program staff in development of handouts, exhibits, visual aids and brochures for distribution.
Adhere to professional ethical standards and professional standards of practice.
Comply with the provisions of the Oklahoma Controlled Substances Act.
Comply with the applicable state and federal regulations in regard to the security, safety and confidentiality of any health services record they create, maintain, transfer, or destroy whether the record is written, taped, computerized, or stored in any other medium.
Maintain verifiable records at an institution or facility that has a published records retention policy that is equal to or exceeds the retention required by federal and/or state regulations.
Practice only within the boundaries of their competence, based on their documented education, training, supervised experience, state and national professional credentials, and appropriate professional experience.
Maintain knowledge and skills required for continuing professional competence.
Maintain the confidentiality of any information received from any person or source about a client, unless authorized in writing by the client or otherwise authorized or required by law or court order.
Renew licenses or certifications and specialty designations before the expiration date.
Provide Absentee Shawnee Tribe Human Resources with a copy of all licensures, certifications, renewal of licensures and certifications upon receipt thereof.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, and/or Health & Exercise Science preferred.
Health Promotion or related field is required.
Three (3) years relevant experience in a related field.
A current personal trainer certification from a nationally recognized training certification program.
Must also maintain cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification.
Experience with electronic medical record software preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must be computer literate required (Windows operating systems – Microsoft Word, Excel). 
Basic graphic design.
Must have a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License.
Must be able to pass a background check and drug test.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend or kneel for long periods of time.
Sitting or standing or walking for long period of time; occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, stooping; good finger dexterity and feeling; frequent repetitive motions; talking hearing and visual acuity
